The Art of Getting Started

Hey you! I know that you have an idea, a dream or a goal that you’ve been sitting on waiting for permission to go after and here it is! DO IT! Start that business, start that workout plan, take that trip, commit to that relationship, whatever it is you’ve been wanting to do, DO IT!

We usually know what we want but hesitate to go over it! Why? Welp, in today’s episode we’ll talk all about it. I’m here to help you master the art of simply getting started.

We’ve all heard the saying that there’s no better time than right now! I’m a firm believer in that. Life is too short to hesitate and play games with your goals. If you want to do something, do it!

I’m excited to empower you to get started and make today be the day you will never forget! Our world is becoming more and more obsessed with comparison and validation. This idea that people who are successful never failed or have a story behind the glory.

Most of you reading this probably haven’t started “that thing” whatever it may be because deep down you're afraid of failing at it. You’ve thought of all the possible obstacles, all the things that could go wrong, how hard it’s going to and how you’re not capable of doing it.

But have you thought about the positives? Like all the things you could learn from the process of trying to do it, the people you could meet along the way, the experiences that could shape or your future or how about this, the fact that you could actually do it and not fail!?

You are holding yourself back from moving forward in your life. How long will you sit at this place that was meant to be a stop sign not a red light?

In life, there are many stop signs that come our way to force us to stop in our tracks. But the rule of a stop sign is to stop, look both ways and continue on. Unlike a red light where you are forced to stop until the light turns green.

If you’re there, I’m letting you know the light is green!

I know that life isn’t perfect and you all face adversity just like I have. But nothing should cause you to stop and be complacent with where you are for too long.

Growth is important! As humans we should consistently grow and evolve. In order to grow we have to make mistakes, overcome challenges and get back up at the times that we fall.

Some of my BIGGEST mistakes were the best life lessons and blessings. The quicker you fail at something, the quicker you can learn, adapt and succeed. No one in life has ever succeeded without failing first. So just get comfortable with the fact that you’re going to fail at some point and that’s perfectly okay, in fact, it’s welcomed!

So here are the things to remember in order to master the art of getting started:

1. Research & Make A Plan

This first step is a given and it’s also something I talk about frequently. Researching and making a plan is the best way to gain the confidence you need to start something. The research will help you prepare and have knowledge on whatever you’re doing in order to create a great plan.

I suggest that once you’ve done the research and have a plan, share it with the right person. Talking about your ideas and plans out loud is a great way to make it feel more real. You’ll also be able to bounce your ideas off someone else who can possibly provide valuable feedback or suggestions.

Make sure the person you choose to share your idea with is someone who loves you, supports you and can relate with what you’re talking about.

2. Excellence Isn’t Required for Growth

Now that you’ve done the research and have a plan, remember that you don’t have to be excellent to grow. Your growth will come from the act of trying new things, putting yourself out there and always striving for your goals.

No, it won’t be perfect and it won’t be easy, but what in life is? Abandon the idea of perfecting the process and instead strive for progress. The most successful people in this world have failed many times, the difference between them and any other person is that they learn from their mistakes and continue with pressing forward.

3. It’s More Important to Start, Than to Succeed

When I look at my life now, everything that I’m successful in started from a failure. Your path will lead you to places you couldn’t have imagined but in order to get there you have to start. The longer it takes you to start, the longer it will take you to succeed.

I remember how scared I was when I started my first business. But I remember thinking to myself, if I don’t try, now, when will I? And if I never try, I’ll never know what my life could have been. I knew I wasn’t happy with how my life was and I had a crystal clear vision of what it could be. So for me, the decision to start was the easiest thing I’ve ever done and it is the 1 thing I will never regret!

4. Don’t Compare Yourself To ANYONE

Stop looking at the gram and comparing yourself to people who you know nothing about. You are titled to have desires and to live the life you want but don’t base those things off what you see other people doing, what they have or how they live.

Be your own person. If you don’t you’ll never make the leap to start anything because your motives are misplaced. You can’t want something just because someone else has it, you have to look deep down at who you are and what you want out of life in order to get the balls to actually go after it.

If your motivation comes from others, you will never get to where you want to be. And no matter how much you have or how great your life is, you will continue to compare. There will always be someone who has more money than you, a bigger house than you, more cars than you. WHO CARES? That cannot be the thing to motivate you, you will never find happiness.

You are your own person, you have your own purpose and your own path. Stay true to it and be an example for others.

5. Create Accountability

Once you make the choice to start, what’s going to hold you accountable? Choosing to start is amazing but having a plan to commit to it is even better!

Like when I made my workout plan I knew I needed accountability. So instead of getting a membership at a regular gym, I found a place whose membership in itself would hold me accountable. Orange Theory! They have a pretty expensive unlimited membership PLUS you have to sign up for the classes in advance and are charged a fee each time you don’t show up to class on top of the membership you already pay for. Now THAT’S accountability!

What can you set up with your plan to hold you accountable? Is there a person who can help? A system you can put in place? Think about it and find something that works for you!

6. Reward Yourself

Once you have an accountability plan in action, set up a reward system. How can you create benchmarks and different rewards to help keep you on track and motivated?

For example, Orange Theory was my accountability partner and my rewards were massages. Each week, if I showed up to all 6 classes, I would get a massage on the 7th day!

Your reward should be something that you really enjoy and that makes sense for what you're working towards. For example if my reward was fudge brownies (even though I love them) they would not be helping me with achieving the goal of getting in shape.

Be creative! Your rewards could be given as often as it makes sense depending on your goal and how long it will take to achieve it.

7. Never Give Up

Starting is great! Now that you’re finally doing it, remember not to give up! Create a list of all the reasons why you want to accomplish your goal as a reminder to not give up when things get tough!

Put your list somewhere where you can see it daily! If you forget the reasons behind what you’re doing, you might fall off the track and never get back on.

I’m so thankful for the day that I decided to start something. That 1 thing led into so many other things but it all steamed from that one day! That one moment of abandoning fear, committing to becoming my best self and creating the life I always wanted!

I hope you enjoyed this episode and until next time, be shameless!
